Vendor Spotlight: Cate, Lord Baltimore Hotel

This week in our Vendor Spotlight, we sat down with Cate Buscher of the Lord Baltimore Hotel for a quick chat...

How did you get started in the wedding business?

After a brief couple of years as a professional actress in New York City, I returned to my home state of Maryland and started an event planning company, Plan It Perfect, in 2005.  I had planned a good number of events for Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey when I worked there as an Admissions Counselor, fresh out of college, so I knew I enjoyed multi-tasking and working with people in that capacity.

How would you describe your approach to weddings?

I approach every event as open-mindedly as I can.  My thinking is that every wedding should reflect the couple, not me.  I use my expertise to enhance the interests and passions of my clients.

What inspires you in your work?

People.  Working with amazing vendors who are in love with what they do, and working with wonderful clients who are in love with each other inspires me to be more, learn more, and do more.

What do you find the most rewarding about your job?

I am all about experiences.  Being able to give someone a moment they will cherish forever is incredibly rewarding.

What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about you or your business?

I enjoy being team player.  I do not approach other vendors with an ego or a selfish desire to make an event all about me.  I love coordinating with others to take a soiree to the next level.

What do you think sets your company apart from others?

The Lord Baltimore Hotel itself, first of all, is a gorgeous building.  Its new owners are unlocking all of the potential that has been underappreciated over the past couple of decades, and with our new multi-million dollar renovation, we will be boasting an amazing new look.  Furthermore, our incredible staff offers our clients the flexibility that I consider crucial to a successful event.

What do you love about weddings?

No two weddings are ever the same.  While there are certain aspects that you will find in just about all of them, each celebration blends different personalities and backgrounds, interests and elements.  Every wedding provides a different experience.

What do you hate about weddings?

The planning process for a wedding can be very taxing and emotional for couples.  It can be challenging to absorb those emotions and not project them on others, or mirror the stress or frustration a bride or groom might be feeling.  Similarly, retaining composure when dealing with other event professionals can be difficult.

What is the coolest thing you’ve ever seen at a wedding?

I once had a bride do a backflip on the dance floor in her wedding dress!

What’s the best piece of advice you can give to couples planning a wedding?

Do not forget that the wedding is a celebration of the two of you.  Don't lose track of who you are in an effort to please too many people.  Guests want to be a part of your celebration rather than voyeurs.  Incorporate your interests, hobbies, and personalities in every aspect of the wedding, and your wedding will be that much more memorable.

Who is your favorite artist or band?

I'm a fan of death metal, to be honest.  But I looooove me some Elton John.

What is the worst song of all time?

There are very few songs that force me to change the station, but Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" is one of them.

Best party you put on?

All three of the Urban Chic Fashion Show fundraisers to benefit the American Visionary Art Museum!

What do you want to see more clients doing for their events?

Personalizing them.  Their functions shouldn't be about incorporating the latest trends or the things they assume an event *has* to have; it should be about sharing an experience with their guests.

What do you do when you are not working?

I'm a mom.  I'm always working ;-)

Interesting fact about you?

I still act on the side.  You can currently see me in a Toyota commercial….
